Mui Fridays: 02
Hey it’s you again! It’s great to see you back for another series of Mui Fridays. This week we went with a bit of a twist on a classic. Keep reading for all the juicy details.
The Music
I chose the music last week so this week Michael was up. We flicked the TV to Youtube and watched some film clips (is this something everyone does? Watching film clips is honestly one of my favourite hobbies).
Michael’s song selection was “The Pretender” by Foo Fighters and then we kind of just went with wherever Youtube wanted to take us from there. Unsurprisingly, it was mostly a bunch of other Foo Fighters songs and a couple of Queens of the Stone Age clips.
My heart lit up when “Tribute” by Tenacious D came on. It is probably my favourite song of all time, and not in an ironic way, in a genuine way. Play it when Vecna comes for me.
Pre Dinner Drinks
First up, the classic Friday shot. As usual, Jameson.
We recently watched ‘A Simple Favor’ (it kills me to write that without the u but it’s American so that’s how they spell it) and Blake Lively’s character makes the perfect martini. Michael loves Blake Lively so now he loves martinis too. I’m still coming around to them but am always grateful to have someone else make me a cocktail.
The Food
That’s right - it’s pizza night. We went a bit rogue and experimented with some new flavours.
Flavour 1: Tomato base, cheese, onion, capsicum and anchovies
Flavour 2: Chinese five spice, hoisin and tomato base, cheese, onion (spring & red) and bacon
We use Lebanese bread for the base and the Aldi squeezy pizza sauce for the tomato base.
I think the key to a delicious pizza is once you’ve spread out your sauce, season it. Garlic powder, salt, pepper, chilli flakes and parmigiano reggiano cheese. From there, no matter what you add it is going to be great.
Hot tip: if using Lebanese bread, don’t go too heavy with the toppings. The base is thin so won’t be able to hold much weight when you pick it up. Also, if your toppings release liquid (I’m looking at you mushrooms) then you can expect your base to get a bit soggy.
These two flavours worked really well together. The hoisin base pizza was very delicious and very rich. The onion / capsicum pizza was more spicy and fresh and cut through the richness of the other one. If sharing, I would go piece for piece, starting with the hoisin, so you end on the capsicum.
Dinner Drinks
We went for a glass of red wine with dinner. It would have also been great to start with this if you didn’t feel like a martini while you were cooking.
We are loving this organic shiraz from Aldi (I think it’s $12) - it’s very good and yes I bought it because of the label but I’m sticking around because of the taste. A great one to have on your wine rack because it’s affordable but your guests will think it’s fancy.
The Entertainment
(NO SPOILERS) So it’s a bit of a funny story. When Stranger Things S4 (part 1) came out, Michael mentioned that he had never seen any of it. I had personally only watched the first season, so we decided to start from the beginning. We watched it pretty religiously every night, sometimes 2 episodes, sometimes only half. Any way, skip forward to Thursday night (30th June) and we finish the last episode of S4 part 1. I say “and now we play the waiting game for part 2” but then on the screen it says “part 2 coming July 1st”. Well howdy doody how lucky are we. No waiting at all.
So yeah, Friday July 1st we watched the first episode. No pics because, no spoilers.
