Mui Fridays: 03

Like everyone else at the moment, this week Michael and I were hit with the flu. Michael first, then me. So by Friday, he was back up on his feet, but I was still feeling under the weather. My apologies in advance for this less exciting edition of Mui Fridays.

The Music

Making A-Z playlists is one of our favourite things to do. There are so many different ways to play. You could do…

  • Song titles from A-Z

  • Artists from A-Z

  • I once did a song from each genre A-Z (but that was really hard because what genre starts with V? I think I ended up bending the rules a bit for that one and made it “viral songs”)

  • We also have done alternating A-Z songs where Michael starts with A, then I do B, he does C and so on

  • You could pick a single genre and only choose A-Z songs/artists in that genre

  • The hardest one we ever did was where the song and artist are A-Z but the artist is the next letter - so for example “All the Small Things, Blink 182” then “Bounce, Calvin Harris” then “Coyote, Dope Lemon” and so on

To add another layer of fun, I strongly recommend coming up with songs from memory ie don’t go scrolling through your other playlists for inspo. This is what keeps it fun to listen back to.

This Friday, we put on a playlist we made together for a road trip earlier this year, so you get x2 A-Z songs and a taste of Marnie vs Michael song choices:

Pre Dinner Drinks

Opting out of the cocktails this week, I decided to treat myself to the fancy chai. I am by no means a chai expert, but I know that this one is yummy. It’s by Byron Chai. Even treated myself to drinking it from the magic mug (I found this mug at Vinnies).

The Food

If there is one style of food we nail, it’s meat and toppings in a wrap. Be it tacos, pitas, gyros… but tonight, it was fish tacos!

In a nice link back to the playlist (which I am just realising now as I am writing this) we actually caught this fish on a fishing charter we did during our Huskisson/Bermagui roadtrip earlier this year (which is when we made that playlist too). Here’s some photos from the day:

I was pretty scared at the start because the ocean was pretty big and I’m terrified of bar crossings, but I ended up having a great time

We caught enough fish to feed us a few meals, so decided to freeze some to enjoy for the coming months, and I am glad we did. It was beautiful Blue Spot Flathead so it has made for some good eating.

If you don’t have access to fresh fish, honestly this tastes just as good with frozen fish - just look to make sure it’s ticking the ethical boxes where possible.

Make your tacos:

We tossed the fish through a bit of cornflour and Old Bay seasoning and seared it in the pan. For toppings, make a little coleslaw with whatever you have in your fridge or freezer. We did red cabbage, red onion, jalapenos, kewpie mayo (honestly, I’m not sure what else because Michael is the coleslaw king and he made it) - oh and we fried up some frozen corn and added that to the slaw too. The game changer for your fish tacos is bacon. Fish is quite lean so the fatty, salty addition of bacon is very welcome. If coriander is your thing, add it. Hot sauce is a must for us. My friend gave me this bottle and we love it - it has a smoky, bbq-y flavour that makes it feel like you cooked this meal over fire (without the artificial taste that some smoky sauces bring). Top it all off with a big squeeze of lime.

You have to tip your head to eat tacos

Drinks with Dinner

Again, none for me but Michael asked me to tell you that beer and fish tacos is the best.

The Entertainment

We are following the masses again and jumped over to the new season of The Umbrella Academy. I accidentally clicked “skip recap” so we were very lost for the first 5 minutes of episode 1 - we couldn’t remember anything about last season lol. Eventually I made the call that we couldn’t continue watching without going and finding the recap and watching it. Even still, I’ve forgotten about so much.

Luna found his new favourite spot

Thanks for sticking around to the end - hope you enjoyed one of the more laid back Mui Fridays on the roster.

See you guys again next week for Mui Friday: 04 (any guesses what you are in store for?)

Cheers,

MM x
