Mui Fridays: 05

The Music

Earlier in the week I tasked Michael with making a playlist for Friday night’s dinner. He said no but he would find the perfect playlist. I knew it wasn’t going to be good when the first song in the playlist was one of my least favourite songs. We gave it a go anyway and it ended up overall not great. We quickly changed it to Kylie Minogue.

The Drinks

The ‘pre dinner drinks’ and ‘during dinner drinks’ were the same this week - beer and rose. I had a bottle of rose that I had opened earlier in the week and needed to finish, and Michael is obsessed with Sol beers at the moment. Ideally, we would have been drinking a whisky sour for pre-dinner and a nice bottle of red for with-dinner.

The Food

I thought I wasn’t a steak person, but it’s just that I hadn’t found my perfect cut. Turns out I love Hanger steak! We got a hunk of it from the Australian Meat Emporium in Alexandria, cut it into servings and froze them. It’s pretty cheap too, at $24.99 a kilo.

Let me break that down…

A 2kg hunk cost us $50 - we made 8 servings of 250g cuts making each serving $6.25. And yes, I know you can get $5 steaks from Aldi, but for top notch meat from a butcher, $6.25 for a serving is pretty great. Also, as a self confessed “well-doner” this steak holds up really well being cooked to my liking - it is still tender!

Our favourite way to have the hanger steak is cooked on the BBQ and seasoned with salt, pepper and a touch of aleppo chilli powder. With it, we made Bon Appetit’s romesco sauce (nutty / tomato /capsicum) and BBQ’d broccolini with Molly Baz’s umami garlicky pistachio sauce (instead of green beans).

Pictured here is Michael’s steak because I like mine more well-done and apparently people want to see it looking like this.

Garlicky, pistachio umami sauce by Molly Baz. My favourite thing about this cook book is the sauces section at the back.

The Entertainment

Earlier in the night we were watching TV and an ad came on with Becky Lucas. It made us think about Last One Laughing and how good it was. So we decided to rewatch it tonight. Honestly, it is so good. Please watch it - it’s on Amazon Prime.
